In both the USA and the UK, most children go to schools that are free. In the USA, these are known as public schools and in the UK, they are known as state schools. 10 % of children in the USA go to schools that their parents pay for, these schools are called private schools. In the USA, national, state and local administration decide what subjects will be taught in schools, so children in different states may be taught different things. Most schools, however, teach very similar subjects. In the USA, education is compulsory between ages of 6 and 18. But the age of starting school is different in different states. Children start school between 5 and 7 years old, the age of finishing school is between 16 and 18 years. Primary education is provided by elementary schools, also known as grade school or grammar school. Sometimes primary education includes kindergarten as well. Primary education is either 5 or 8 years. It is followed (or not) by a number of years of middle school education (usually 3 years). Secondary education is provided by high schools. А student can attend either combined junior-senior high school or junior high (grades 7—9) and senior high schools (grades 9—12). So, secondary education also takes 6 years. In the USA, students do not take national examinations but it does not mean that they do not have tests. Students in high school usually take examinations in the subjects they are studying at the end of each semester. American students who want to go to get higher education must take a test called the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) during the last year in high school. Most USA colleges and universities pay attention to students’ SAT results when they are deciding which new students to accept. Students pay to take the SATs, and their results are sent to three collages that they hope to go to. 3) Listen to the information about the system of education in the USA and for questions 1-6 choose the correct answer.(listening for specific information) 1.
