Sergei Korolev was a famous Russian rocket engineer and designer, often called the Father of the space programme. He studied at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute and the Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School, and also graduated from the Moscow Pilot School. Korolev directed the design, construction, testing and launching of the Vostok, Voskhod and Soyuz spacecraft. He prepared and took part in the launch of the first artificial Earth satellite in the world on October 4, 1957. He also prepared the first manned space flight in history, when Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth and returned safely on April 12, 1961. In 1965, he prepared the Voskhod-2 flight, during which Alexei Leonov made the first space walk in history. Korolev was awarded the title Hero of Labour, the Lenin Prize and the Tsiolkovsky Gold Medal.

Konstantin Stanislavsky was a great Russian actor, director and producer, best known for creating the Stanislavsky system of acting. He had a great talent, an impressive appearance, a vivid imagination and fine intuition. As a child, he became interested in the circus at the age of 8 and often staged imaginary circuses. He first appeared on stage at 14. Stanislavsky’s first independent production was L. Tolstoy’s The Fruits of Enlightenment in 1891. He was the founder of the Moscow Art Theatre, opened in 1898. He performed many famous roles, including Astrov in Uncle Vanya and Gayev in The Cherry Orchard. In 1918, he became head of the Bolshoi Opera Studio, which was later named after him. In 1922–24, he toured Europe and the United States with the Moscow Art Theatre, promoting his ideas.
