II READING COMPREHENSION (AB-II)

Read the story of John Carr, who changed his career, and decide in which gap (1—10) each phrase (A—K) should go. There is one extra phrase that you do not need to use.

In his own way, John Carr, 31, was a protester. Everything about him suggested he would become a teacher, (1) but he turned to law. After two years as a lawyer, he realised he would prefer to be in the classroom. He now works as a trainee teacher (2) at a private secondary school in Guildford, Surrey.
“I used to wake up each morning and think: ‘Oh no; (3) I don’t want to go in today.’ And I just thought, well, maybe that’s what life is like. It is such a relief to find it is not. I left law about 18 months ago. I was with a large firm in Brighton. I felt like I wasn’t doing (4) anything constructive. I suppose I could have moved to a different firm (5) to see if that made a difference to my job satisfaction. But, to be honest, I didn’t really want to spend five or six years waiting. I think I knew what (6) I’d always wanted to do — I just needed to finally go and do it.
Both my parents were teachers, I was drawn to teachers and people said (7) I would be good at the job. I suppose I went against my parents’ wishes. It didn’t surprise my friends and family when I finally accepted that.
I am really enjoying what I am doing. I am learning on the job, teaching politics, economics and geography. Every day is different. There is (8) so much variety, freedom and creativity. I feel I’m doing something that is good for people. But I am here for myself as much as for the students. In the future I’d like to work (9) in different types of schools and possibly teach overseas.
