Space exploration began long before the first space flights. For many centuries people observed the sky, studied stars and planets, and dreamed of travelling beyond the Earth. Scientists and inventors gradually created rockets and other devices that made space travel possible.

The first real step into space was made by unmanned flights. Artificial satellites were launched to study the Earth, the Moon, the Sun and other planets. Space probes sent a lot of important information and helped scientists learn more about outer space.

Then manned flights into space started. In 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. After that many astronauts and cosmonauts flew into space, worked on space stations and carried out different scientific experiments.

Space exploration has always involved both competition and cooperation. At first, countries competed to be the first in space. Later they began to cooperate, because space research is very expensive and difficult. Today international projects help people explore space together.
