Space exploration began with the first manned flight in 1961, when Yuri Gagarin on board Vostok 1 became the first person to orbit the Earth. This was one of the greatest achievements of the Soviet Union in the space race with the USA.
In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova made history as the first woman in space on Vostok 6. Two years later, in 1965, Alexei Leonov became the first person to leave a spaceship and perform a space walk on Voskhod 2.
The USA also made important progress. In 1968, Apollo 8 became the first manned flight to orbit the Moon. In 1969, Apollo 11 made the first manned Moon landing, and Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin walked on the Moon.
Later, space exploration became a field of cooperation. In 1975, the Soviet and American crews worked together during the Sojuz 19 and Apollo 18 mission. In the following years, different countries continued to cooperate in space research and launched many probes and orbiters to study planets and other space objects.
So, space exploration developed from competition between the Soviet Union and the USA to international cooperation, and it brought many famous achievements and discoveries.
