Read the text and then choose the worst five jobs from the list. Compare your choice with the other students’ and explain it.
A London-based magazine asked readers to send e-mails telling about the most unpleasant jobs they ever did. The result was a book of 100 anecdotes about work. The editor said, “We are told that working hard is good for us, but some jobs make people so unhappy that they have to take anti-depressants. They often work long hours and get very little money for it.” Here are some of the most unpopular jobs which made the top of the list.
postman
hospital nurse
rats exterminator
sandwich maker
hospital administrator
bus driver
night office cleaner
holiday camp cleaner
fish head slicer
chicken inspector
kitchen help
gravedigger
spy
washing-up person
cinema popcorn seller
traffic counterWhat other jobs can you put on this list?
Here is one possible choice of the worst five jobs:
- gravedigger
- rats exterminator
- washing-up person
- fish head slicer
- night office cleaner
These jobs are unpleasant because they are dirty, tiring, or emotionally difficult. A gravedigger works with death, a rats exterminator deals with disgusting pests, a washing-up person does boring hard work, a fish head slicer has to cut up smelly fish, and a night office cleaner works at night and often alone.
Other jobs that can be added to the list: garbage collector, sewer worker, toilet cleaner, slaughterhouse worker, road sweeper.
