Student A
You are Farrah Keating’s sister. You meet the father of the child who was knocked down. Explain how the accident happened and say how sorry you are for what happened. Say how you feel now. Explain wily Farrah Keating’s punishment is fair.
Student В
You are Maira Abbasi’s father. You meet Farrah Keating’s sister. Ask how the accident happened and wily the driver didn’t stop to help your daughter. Explain how it has affected your family. Explain why you think Farrah Keating’s punishment is not fair.
8 Work in groups. Discuss the punishments in situations 1-4 below. Express your opinions and agree/disagree with each other.
1 A 15-year-old boy bullied oilier children and stole their money and valuables. He insulted teachers and tried to burn down the school, lie was suspended for three weeks.
2 An 18-year-old student created a virus which infected millions of computers around the world. He received a ten-year prison sentence.
3 A US citizen blew up a government building and killed 168 people. He received the death penalty.
4 A man drove the get-away car in a bank robbery in which a security guard was killed. His sentence was life imprisonment.

Do you know the saying Crime doesn’t pay? Consult the dictionary of idioms, search the Internet for more information and write a short essay on the subject (150-200 words).
Use the following plan:
• explain the meaning of the saying and its origin;
• give 1-2 examples (from real life, books or Aims) to illustrate it;

5. Speak Out
The box should be completed with the bold phrases from Exercise 4.
6. Conversations
The conversations should be completed with expressions from Speak Out. The first conversation is formal, the second one is informal.
7. Role play
Student A:
I’m very sorry about what happened. Farrah was driving too fast and didn’t see Maira in time. She feels terrible about it now. She knows her punishment is fair because she was careless and did not stop to help.
Student B:
How did the accident happen? Why didn’t the driver stop to help my daughter? This has affected our family very badly. We think Farrah’s punishment is not fair because the accident was not intentional.
8. Discussion
- I think the punishment is fair. The boy behaved very badly and tried to burn down the school.
- In my opinion, a ten-year prison sentence is too severe, but the virus caused huge damage.
- I agree with the death penalty in this case because many people were killed.
- I think life imprisonment is fair because the man took part in a serious crime.
Project idea
Crime doesn’t pay means that crime does not bring real success or happiness. The phrase probably became popular because people noticed that criminals may get money or power for a short time, but in the end they are punished.
For example, in many detective stories the criminal is caught after a while and loses everything. In real life, people who commit fraud or theft may enjoy the results for some time, but later they are arrested and have to face the law.
I agree with this saying. Crime may seem profitable at first, but it always leads to trouble, punishment, and ruined lives.
