The Merchant of Venice is a comedy (though it has some serious and dramatic moments). It is one of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays.

It tells the story of Antonio, Bassanio, Portia, Shylock and other characters. The play is set in Venice and Belmont. It is known for the trial scene, the bond between Antonio and Shylock, and the themes of mercy, justice, friendship and love.
