William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor, born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He is often called the greatest writer in the English language.

Shakespeare wrote about 39 plays, 154 sonnets and several poems. His works are usually divided into comedies, tragedies and histories.

Some of his most famous plays are Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello and King Lear. These plays are still performed all over the world because they deal with important themes such as love, jealousy, power, betrayal and fate.

Shakespeare died in 1616, but his influence on literature and the English language is still very strong today.
