Comparatives and superlatives are formed in different ways:

• Short adjectives/adverbs: add -er for the comparative and -est for the superlative. For example: tall – taller – the tallest.
• Long adjectives/adverbs: use more for the comparative and the most for the superlative. For example: beautiful – more beautiful – the most beautiful.
• Adjectives/adverbs ending in -y: change y to i and add -er/-est. For example: happy – happier – the happiest.

The irregular forms in the table are:

• good – better – the best
• bad – worse – the worst
• far – farther/further – the farthest/the furthest
