In The Merchant of Venice, a young Venetian merchant named Bassanio wants to marry Portia, a rich and intelligent woman from Belmont. To win her hand, he needs money, so his friend Antonio borrows it from the Jewish moneylender Shylock. Shylock agrees, but on one condition: if Antonio cannot repay the loan on time, Shylock will take a pound of Antonio’s flesh.

Meanwhile, Portia’s father has left a test for her suitors: they must choose the correct casket to win her. Bassanio chooses wisely and marries Portia. However, Antonio’s ships are believed to be lost, and Shylock demands his terrible penalty. In court, Portia disguises herself as a lawyer and saves Antonio by arguing that Shylock may take the flesh, but not a drop of blood. Shylock loses the case and is forced to give up his wealth and convert to Christianity.

The play mixes comedy and drama and shows themes of love, friendship, justice, mercy, and prejudice.
